Sessions run for 50 minutes with both partners and one licensed therapist. Some couples add occasional individual sessions with the same therapist, but the relationship stays the focus.
Your therapist is not there to decide who is right. Their job is to slow down the conversations that keep going wrong at home and help you both see what is actually happening in them. That usually turns out to be a pattern rather than a person.
The first session is mostly listening. Your therapist will ask what brought you in, a little about your history together, and what each of you would like to be different. You will each get time to speak without being interrupted, which for some couples is the first time in a while.
After that, sessions move between working through what has come up recently and building specific skills, such as how to raise something difficult without it escalating, or how to repair after an argument rather than letting it settle unresolved.
Most couples come weekly at first and move to every other week as things steady. Some are working on one specific thing and finish within a few months. Others stay longer. Both are normal.
If one of you is less sure about this than the other, that is common and it is workable. Coming to a first session is not agreeing to anything beyond that session.

Marriage Counseling
Marriage counseling and couples counseling are the same work under different names. What tends to differ is what married couples bring: years of accumulated patterns, decisions made together that are hard to unpick, and often children, finances or extended family in the mix.
We work with married couples at every stage. Some come after a specific breach of trust. Some come because the connection has quietly gone and neither of you is sure when. Some come because you are considering separating and want to be certain you have tried properly first.
Pre-marital counseling
We also work with couples before marriage, going through the conversations that are easier to have now than in five years: money, children, in-laws, expectations, and what each of you assumes marriage will look like. Several sessions before the wedding do more good than most couples expect.
What Couples Come In With
Every relationship is different, but these come up most often:
Parenting and co-parenting differences. Including blended families and step-parenting.
Communication that keeps breaking down. The same argument, over and over, in slightly different words.
Rebuilding after infidelity or broken trust. Whether the relationship can recover, and what that would take.
Growing apart. Nothing dramatic happened, but you are living alongside each other rather than with each other.
Intimacy and physical connection. Including differences in what each of you wants or needs.
Stress from outside the relationship. Work pressure, illness, money or caring for a parent. Where anxiety or depression is affecting one of you, we can support that alongside your couples work.
Divorce, separation and remarriage. Deciding, or working through it as constructively as possible.
Fertility, adoption and the year after a baby. Periods that put pressure on even solid relationships.
Preparing for marriage. Working through the practical conversations in advance.
Co-dependency and unbalanced dynamics. Where one partner has been carrying more than their share.
How We Work With Couples
Safe.
Both of you can say the difficult thing without it being used against you afterwards.
Balanced.
Your therapist does not take sides. Both voices get equal room.
Affirming.
We work with couples of all backgrounds, structures and orientations, without assumption.
Practical.
Specific tools you can use at home, not just insight in the room.
Consistent.
Our therapists stay, so you are not rebuilding trust with someone new partway through.
Therapy is not about deciding who is right. It is about understanding the pattern you are both caught in and finding a better way through it together.

Our Couples Therapist
Couples work is its own skill. These are the clinicians who do it regularly, and we match you based on what you are working through rather than on who happens to be free.

Self-pay couples sessions at ThinkSpot are $150.00 for 50 minutes. Some insurance plans cover couples counseling and some do not, depending on how sessions are coded and what your plan allows. We check your benefits before your first session, and we offer payment plans where they are needed.

Sometimes. Insurance generally covers therapy treating a diagnosed condition, and couples counseling is not always coded that way. Many plans do cover it, particularly when one partner is also being treated for anxiety or depression. We verify your specific plan before you attend so there are no surprises.
-
Yes. The two terms describe the same work and the same sessions. Marriage counseling simply refers to married couples, while couples counseling covers partners at any stage, including those who are dating, engaged, cohabiting or long-term unmarried.
-
This is common and it does not mean nothing can be done. Some people start with an individual session to work out how to raise it. Others find that agreeing to one session, with no commitment beyond that, is far easier for a reluctant partner than agreeing to therapy in general.
-
Most couples come weekly at first and move to every other week as things steady. Couples working on one specific issue often finish within three to four months. Those rebuilding after a significant breach of trust usually need longer. Your therapist will give you a realistic sense after the first few sessions.
-
Usually yes, since the work happens between you. Some couples add occasional individual sessions with the same therapist, which can be useful when one partner needs space to work something through. Your therapist will suggest it if it would help.
-
Yes. We offer video couples sessions across the whole of Texas, with the same licensed therapists and the same session length. You can both join from the same room, or from different places if one of you travels for work or you are currently living apart.
-
No. Your therapist's job is to understand the pattern between you rather than to decide who is right. If either of you ever feels the sessions are becoming one-sided, say so, because that is important information and your therapist will want to hear it.
-
Often, yes. Some couples use it to work out whether the relationship can be repaired. Others use it to separate as constructively as possible, particularly where there are children involved. Both are legitimate reasons to come, and neither commits you to an outcome.
-
Yes. We work with couples before marriage on the conversations that are easier now than later: money, children, extended family, and what each of you expects married life to look like. Most couples come for a handful of sessions in the months before the wedding.

Yes. We work with couples at any stage, including dating, engaged, cohabiting and long-term unmarried partners, and with couples of all orientations and relationship structures.
